Product Description
While classic Bletilla striata is typically known for its pink-purple blooms, the Bletilla striata yellow offers a beautiful true-yellow species sometimes also called Bletilla ochracea (Chinese Butterfly Orchid).
Key Characteristics of bletilla yellow
- Flowers: It produces soft yellow to cream flowers with striking reddish or brownish markings on the lip. Polyploid ‘Yellow’ varieties feature pale yellow blooms.
- Foliage: They feature the same attractive, accordion-pleated, sword-like foliage of standard Chinese ground orchids.
- Bloom Time: They typically flower from late spring to early summer.
How to Grow
- Hardiness: These hardy terrestrial orchids generally thrive in USDA zones 6-9 and can survive temperatures down to -20°C if mulched.
- Soil & Water: They prefer humus-rich, moisture-retentive, yet well-draining soil. They can even be used as marginal aquatics around bog gardens.
- Light: They grow well in dappled shade to full sun.
- Maintenance: They slowly spread via pseudobulbs (corms) to form large clumps. Reduce watering significantly during their winter dormancy.
