Product Description
Bletilla striata Blue Dragon (also known as ‘Soryu’) is a hardy, terrestrial ground orchid that produces stunning lavender-blue blooms. Unlike tropical orchids, Bletilla striata blue dragon can be planted directly in garden beds or borders. It thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soil and dappled shade.
Key Plant Characteristics
- Blooms: Late spring to early summer; each upright stem holds up to a dozen delicate, periwinkle flowers.
- Foliage: Distinctive, accordion-pleated green leaves that add architectural interest to the garden.
- Hardiness: Generally hardy to USDA Zones 5–8; easily naturalizes and forms beautiful clumps over time.
Care & Cultivation
- Light: Thrives in partial shade. Protect from harsh, direct midday sun.
- Soil: Plant in moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil (like a 50/50 mix of bark/compost and peat moss) that drains well.
- Planting: Position pseudobulbs shallowly, just about 1 to 2 inches below the surface.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the active growing and blooming seasons. In late autumn, foliage dies off; reduce watering to keep the dormant corms barely moist.
- Winter Protection: While relatively cold-hardy, it is a good idea to apply a thick, dry mulch (bark or leaf mould) over the tubers in late autumn, or bring potted specimens into an unheated, frost-free area for the winter
