How to Care for Your Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula)

Looking after a Venus Flytrap isn’t rocket science — it’s more like owning a pet with leafy jaws and a big personality! Follow these Venus Flytrap care tips to keep your carnivorous companion happy, healthy, and snapping for years to come.

Light & Location

Venus Flytraps love the sun — the more, the better. Aim for 4–6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Outdoors, full sun is ideal; indoors, a south-facing windowsill makes the perfect perch. If light is limited, a grow light can keep your plant fired up and photosynthesising.

The Right Soil

Forget multipurpose compost — it’s way too rich for these bog-dwellers. Use our special Carnivorous Plant & Venus Flytrap Compost, designed to mimic their natural, acidic, nutrient-poor habitat. Your Flytrap’s roots will thank you.

Water Wisely

These plants are fussy drinkers. Use rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water only — never tap water, which can contain minerals that harm them. Keep the soil consistently damp (like a wrung-out sponge) by standing the pot in a shallow tray of water.

Feeding Time

Venus Flytraps are hunters, not snack machines. They’ll catch their own insects outdoors, but if you’re growing one inside, you can treat it to a tiny fly or gnat every few weeks. Skip the big bugs and never feed them meat — they’re carnivores, not carnivorous chefs!

Winter Dormancy

From late autumn to early spring, your Venus Flytrap goes dormant — think of it as a plant nap. The traps may turn black or disappear, but don’t panic! Keep it cool (around 2–10°C), give it plenty of light, and reduce watering. Come spring, it’ll reawaken, hungrier than ever.

Fun Facts About Venus Flytraps

  • ⚡ Lightning Fast: A Venus Flytrap can snap shut in less than a tenth of a second — the fastest meal in the plant world.
  • 🪲 Selective Eaters: They prefer small, juicy insects like flies and gnats. Each trap only works 3–4 times before it retires.
  • 🌱 Built for the Bog: Native to the Carolinas, these plants thrive in wet, acidic conditions that would kill most others.

Growing a Venus Flytrap is pure magic — a mix of science experiment and living artwork. With a little sun, rainwater, and patience, your plant will reward you with a front-row seat to nature’s most dramatic dinner show.
