Venus Flytraps – The Legendary Carnivorous Plant

The Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is one of the easiest carnivorous plants to care for — as long as you follow a few simple rules: give it plenty of sunshine, rainwater only, and no poking! (It tires the plant and shortens its life.) With the right care, these fascinating plants can live for years.

At Wack’s Wicked Plants, we stock a wide variety of Venus Flytraps, each with its own unique teeth, shapes, and colours. From striking red traps to green monsters with serrated jaws, every Flytrap is grown with care right here in the UK.

Venus Flytraps do exactly what they’re famous for — catching and digesting insects. They use sweet nectar and vibrant colour to lure their prey, then snap shut when two of the tiny trigger hairs are touched. The trap tightens around the insect, slowly digesting it to extract vital nutrients.

In summer, place your Venus Flytrap in full sun, either indoors or outside, standing in a deep saucer of rainwater or distilled water. During winter, don’t panic if it looks worse for wear — it’s not dead, just dormant. Leaves may blacken or die back completely while the plant rests underground. Keep it somewhere cool, bright, and frost-free (below 10°C), and reduce watering so the soil stays damp but not soaked. Avoid letting it dry out completely, and your Flytrap will wake up strong in spring, ready to feed again.
