Dionaea muscipula (Venus Fly Trap) – Care Leaflet
Summer
> Full, direct sunshine, in- or outdoors
> Rainwater only, sit in water (in a deep saucer)
> You cannot overwater the plant in summer
Feeding: we have never found this to be necessary, as the plants only require a few insects per year to survive. If you are worried, stick the plant outside on a sunny day and watch it go to work
Winter
> We recommend a cool, airy, light area, between O °C to 10 °C. An unheated conservatory or cold greenhouse on a frost stat are ideal.
> The plants will have a dormancy period, which can vary from just a few traps browning/turning black (remove) to the whole plant going underground.
> During dormancy, the main risk to the plant is rotting caused by fungal diseases, usually a result of overwatering. Reduce watering, keeping the plant damp, but never let them dry out completely.
Rainwater alternatives: distilled, de-ionised, reverse osmosis water
Repotting: The plant benefits from annual or bi-annual repotting, in a specific peat and perlite mixture or specialist peat free mix (both available from our online shop).
Seeds: Keep refrigerated, sow from March onwards frost free, on top of the peat/perlite mixture, do not cover, sit in rainwater in full sun.
We highly recommend you research your plants on the internet for more detailed information, or browse our website.
