Pinguicula (Butterwort) – Care Leaflet
Summer
> A position on a windowsill, greenhouse or conservatory, full sun or semi shade.
> Rainwater only, sit in water (in a deep saucer).
Feeding: we have never found this to be necessary, as the plants only require a few insects per year to survive.
Winter
> These plants are not hardy, so move indoors or heated greenhouse. In winter the plant can take full sun.
> The native Butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris and Pinguicula gtandiflora) are best outside in winter. Theu will form gemmae in winter.
> The plants have a dormancy period, when their leaves become non-carnivorous.
> During this period, the main risk to the plant is rotting caused by fungal diseases, usually a result of overwatering. Reduce watering, keeping the plant damp, but never let them dry out completely.
Rainwater alternatives: distilled, de-ionised, reverse osmosis water
Repotting: When the plant is bursting out of it’s pot, in a specific peat and perlite mixture or specialist peat free mix (both available from our online shop).
We highly recommend you research your plants on the internet for more detailed information, or browse our website.
