Drosera (Sundew)- Care Leaflet

Summer

> Full, direct sunshine, in- or outdoors

> Rainwater only, sit in water (in a deep saucer)

> You cannot overwater the plant in summer

Feeding: we have never found this to be necessary, as the plants only require a few insects per year to survive. If you are worried, stick the plant outside on a sunny day and watch it go to work

Winter

> We recommend a cool, airy, light area. Drosera capensis, capensis alba, nidiformis, aliciae, madagascariensis, spatulata are not hardy, will take down to 0°C. Hardy sundews (Drosera binata, filiformis) are best kept in a cold greenhouse or polytunnel. Native sundews (Drosera rotundifolia, anglica, intermedia) van be grown outside.

> The plants will have a dormancy period, which can vary from just a few leaves browning/crisping, to everything dying back – remove all brown bits. Hardy sundews will form a winter bud.

> During dormancy, the main risk to the plant is rotting caused by fungal diseases, usually a result of overwatering. Reduce watering, keeping the plant damp, but never let them dry out completely. This is not usually an issue if the plant is outdoors.

Rainwater alternatives: distilled, de-ionised, reverse osmosis water

Repotting: When the plant is bursting out of it’s pot, in a specific peat and perlite mixture or specialist peat free mix (both available from our online shop). Best time for repotting and splitting (if you want) is early spring.

Seeds: Keep refridgerated, sow from March onwards frost free, on top of the peat/perlite mixture, do not cover, sit in rainwater in full sun.

We highly recommend you research your plants on the internet for more detailed information, or browse our website.
